Grief counselors were at Weatherford High School Wednesday to help students deal with the loss of a classmate who died Tuesday in a two-vehicle wreck south of Weatherford.
Sarah Brinkmann, 17, was active in the WHS Leadership Council, Student Council and other activities, according to a news release from Derik Moore, schools spokesman. The wreck, which was reported 10 a.m. Tuesday on Farm Road 51, also killed Keith Defoe, 65, of Pueblo, Colo., and severely injured his wife, 67-year-old Marcella Defoe.WHS Principal Dr. David Belding on Tuesday afternoon informed faculty and staff members about the student's death, Moore said.Additional counselors, he added, "arrived at the high school this morning to assist those coping with this tragedy.""Also," Moore added, "a letter will be sent home with all high school students this afternoon encouraging parents to visit with their children as they come to grips with the loss of a fellow classmate and friend."Brinkmann also participated in the Roo Crew and the Melon Vine yearbook staff, Moore said. She had previously attended Hall Middle School and the WHS Ninth Grade Center, Moore said. The wreck happened just north of where FM 51 merges with Texas 171, about a mile south of the Weatherford city limits, said Trooper Darin Woodson of the Texas Department of Public Safety highway patrol.A DPS report stated that Brinkmann was northbound on FM 51 in a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina. The Defoes were southbound in a 2000 Chevrolet Astro Van. But, as the two vehicles started to pass each other, the Lumina swerved left into the van, the DPS said."The why is still under investigation," Woodson said. The collision left the Lumina facing south on the road and the van landed in a ditch on the west side of the road, the DPS said.Brinkmann and the Defoes were wearing seat belts, the DPS said.Marcella Defoe was taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Fort Worth hospital with neck and back injuries, the DPS said. She was listed in fair condition Wednesday morning at Harris, a hospital spokeswoman said.
