JOHNSON COUNTY — Solar panels and copper wiring are being stolen from gas well sites in Johnson County and the sheriff's department is asking the public to help identify two suspects in these thefts.

The copper wiring is likely being sold for scrap, but the solar panels have several applications on ranches, other gas well production sites and in marijuana grow houses where they can be used to produce electricity, Sheriff Bob Alford said.

"It's more of a hindrance and a nuisance, but it's creating a major problem for us," Alford said. "We know it's people who know the industry."

Officials have spread out across Johnson County to mark and identify remaining solar panels and copper wiring to deter future thefts, according to authorities. The thefts have being going on for about two weeks, Alford said.

The sheriff's department is circulating photographs that captured two men suspected of stealing solar panels from a Cleburne well site. Based on the photos, the thieves are using a dark colored Ford F-150 to carry away the stolen material.

Authorities are asking that if anyone sees anything suspicious around a well site, that they not approach the suspects, but call the Johnson County sheriff's office at 817-556-6060, or the investigator assigned to this case at 817-556-6058.
