A woman who told police that she found her mother dead on the ground level floor of her two-story home this week has confessed to the killing, according to Hood County sheriff's deputies.

Brenda Kiernan, 49, was in the Somervell County jail on Friday facing a murder charge. Bail was set at $1 million, a jail spokeswoman said.

Investigators determined that Kiernan's mother, Natha Hudson, 72, died days before authorities were called. It is not known exactly how long Hudson had been dead, said George Temple, Hood County chief deputy.

Kiernan called deputies about 6 p.m. Tuesday and told them that she found Hudson dead at her home on Flagstaff Drive in the Pecan Plantation gated community of Granbury, Temple said.

Kiernan confessed to her mother's slaying during an interview with an investigator, Temple said. A preliminary autopsy report indicated that Hudson was shot in the back of the head with a .38-caliber handgun, Temple said.
