FORT WORTH -- A Trophy Club woman accused of leaving the scene of a 2006 traffic accident in Keller that killed a dog and seriously injured his owner as the two walked on the shoulder of a road was sentenced to four years probation on Monday in a Fort Worth courtroom, court officials said Tuesday.
As part of a plea agreement, Debra Dodd, 56, pleaded guilty Monday to failure to stop and render aid in the incident. She then was sentenced to probation with deferred adjudication in Criminal District Court No. 2.Authorities had to wait almost two years for test results on fibers that were transferred from the owner’s shirt to a passenger-side mirror on a Honda Pilot SUV that investigators believe hit the young woman and her family’s dog, Sammy. A charge of failure to stop and render aid was filed last year against Dodd. She surrendered to authorities about a week after the accident. She immediately posted $5,000 bail and has remained free. Dodd had faced a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. On the night of June 7, 2006, then-20-year-old Nicole Gilbert and her 12-year-old brother, Mitchell Gilbert, took their year-old golden retriever for a walk near North Pearson Lane and Coventry Place in Keller. They were a few blocks from home when a Honda Pilot hit Nicole Gilbert and Sammy, police said. The 20-year-old was struck so hard that the passenger-side mirror was ripped off, reports say. She suffered a broken wrist and bruises, officials said. Sammy was thrown about 15 feet and died on the street.DOMINGO RAMIREZ JR. 817-390-7763
