The National Weather Service has extended a heat advisory for North Texas until 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Temperatures are expected to reach 100 to 105 degrees through Tuesday, with a heat index in the afternoon exceeding 105 with the humidity, the weather service in Fort Worth said.

It won't be much cooler at night, the weather service said. Overnight lows are expected to be in the upper 70s and low 80s.

At 10:30 a.m. today, it was 91 degrees in Fort Worth, with the high expected to reach 104. The average high for this date is 95, according to the weather service. On Sunday, the temperature reached 104 at 5 p.m.

The weather service advises people not to leave children and pets unattended in vehicles "under any circumstances."

Those involved in outdoor activities are urged to take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water and wear loose-fitting and light-colored clothing.

The weather service is predicting that temperatures won't dip below 100 until Friday, when it'll be a brisk 99. And there's a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Friday morning and again Sunday, forecasters say.

Winds this afternoon are expected to be out of the south at 5 to 10 mph.
