HALTOM CITY -- A 5-year-old boy was in critical condition Monday at a Fort Worth hospital after he was shot in the back of the head with a BB-gun during the weekend, police said Monday.

Investigators believe the boy’s 13-year-old uncle accidentally shot him Saturday night as the two were outside playing at a house in the 3500 block of Eastridge Drive, police said.

The 5-year-old boy who police did not identify was at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth Monday afternoon.

The 13-year-old boy was interviewed by police Saturday night and released to his grandparents at the house, Haltom City police Sgt. Eric Peters said Monday.

The incident was reported about 8:10 p.m. Saturday.

When police arrived, officers found a woman holding the 5-year-old boy, according to police reports.

“The rifle was found broken in half,” Peters said Monday. “Apparently, an adult at the house took the rifle away from the 13-year-old and broke it.”

The 5-year-old boy was at the house visiting his grandparents while his parents were away, Peters said.

Investigators have contacted the Tarrant County district attorney’s office to determine if any charges would be filed, Peters said.

Authorities continued the investigation on Monday.
