Authorities are investigating the deaths of 11 horses on a 3,000-acre ranch just northeast of Lake Weatherford, possibly from inadequate access to food and water, Parker County Sheriff's investigators said.
Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler said 40 horses were on the property between Weatherford and Azle. Of those 40, he said 11 are dead.Nine were found dead on Wednesday, and two were euthanized Thursday, Fowler said.Fowler said when he flew over the property Thursday morning, he saw 19 horses standing. He said the owner of the horses will probably move them to another location.“This is a terrible situation,” Fowler said of the dead and neglected horses. He said he had driven on the property in the past and that the horses were "fat and healthy," and that the neglect seemed to be recent. Fowler said the owner of the horses leased the land for his animals. He hired someone to feed and water the horses. “That’s when things went wrong,” Fowler said.“There was no water, and the well was broken. It’s a good thing we found them when we did,” Fowler said.Fowler declined to name the person who owns the horses or the person hired to care for them.Fowler said he was told hay was brought to the horses on Sunday, but investigators didn't see any evidence of it.Once the owner of the horses found out what happened, he immediately got a veterinarian to the horses and had the well repaired,” Fowler said.“He was more than upset,” he said.Elizabeth Campbell, 817-390-7696
