CLEBURNE -- Six years of planning and organization and three years of construction culminate this weekend with the opening of Cleburne Golf Links.

The municipal course is more than 7,000 yards long on the shores of Lake Pat Cleburne, said Charlie Hodges, city spokesman.

The ribbon cutting and open house begin at 8 a.m. Friday. WFAA-TV Sports anchor Dale Hansen will serve as host for the event, Hodges said.

City residents are also encouraged to attend the open house to learn how they can qualify for discounts on greens fees. Those interested should bring a water bill or other documents proving residency, Hodges said.

Arlington-based golf course architect John Colligan designed this project.

"Golf should be enjoyed, not endured," Colligan said. "That's our company's motto and the philosophy behind the Cleburne Golf Links. If you can get the golfer to play the proper tee set for their skill level, everyone -- even the youth golfer -- can enjoy this golf course."

Public play at the Golf Links begins Saturday. The city is taking tee times at the pro shop. Head Pro Craig Nieman suggests that any golfer wishing to play either Saturday or Sunday should get a tee time as soon as possible by calling 817-641-4501.
