Flames from a backyard grill ignited the back of a home Sunday evening in Trophy Club, causing significant damage, the community's fire chief said.

The blaze was reported about 7 p.m. at the home on Greenleaf Drive, Fire Chief Danny Thomas said.

"They had a barbecue malfunction on the back porch and it caught the roof on fire," Thomas said. "It got into eaves and the attic on the back side of the house.

"There was pretty extensive damage to the home, but the residents got out. No one was hurt."

Thomas' three-man department was assisted by firefighters from Roanoke, Keller, Westlake and Bedford and a medic from Grapevine, he said.

The help was needed because temperatures had been in the 90s; firefighters rotated in and out of the battle to avoid overheating.

They had the fire under control at about 9:30 p.m., Thomas said.

The chief estimated that flames damaged about 80 percent of the home. He also estimated the damage at approximately $250,000.

The family did not need help from the American Red Cross because they had relatives nearby, Thomas said.
