ROANOKE -- An adult certification hearing for a teen accused of being involved in the killing of his girlfriend’s mother has been scheduled for next week in Denton.
The hearing for the 17-year-old is at 9 a.m. June 9, in County Court of Law No. 1 in Denton. The hearing has been delayed for several weeks after the teen was taken to Vernon State Hospital for treatment earlier this year. The Denton County district attorney’s office has declined to comment on any details because the teen is being treated as a juvenile. Just before the 17-year-old was taken to the hospital, Denton County prosecutors were seeking to have him certified to stand trial as an adult in the death of 43-year-old Susan Bailey, his girlfriend’s mother. She was found Sept. 28 beaten and stabbed to death in an upstairs hallway at her home in the 200 block of Oxford Drive in Roanoke. The boy was 16 at the time. Jennifer Bailey, 18, is accused of conspiring with the teen and her 14-year-old brother to kill her mother. Susan Bailey died from a stab wound to the neck, according to an autopsy by the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office. Jennifer Bailey was being held without bail in the Denton County Jail on Tuesday on suspicion of capital murder. The three were arrested in South Dakota, driving Susan Bailey’s car, police said. According to search warrant affidavits, the teens planned the killing for several days and intended to flee to Canada. Investigators seized spiral notebooks, binders, handwritten papers, computers and disks that they described as “pertaining to the preparation of murder.” Roanoke police have said that Susan Bailey had been upset with her daughter because she wouldn’t stop seeing her boyfriend. Police went to Susan Bailey’s home after Yankton, S.D., police stopped a car owned by her and detained Jennifer Bailey, her boyfriend and her brother. According to the affidavits, a 15-year-old Fort Worth girl was also involved in the plan. The girl was taken into custody Sept. 23 in Fort Worth and accused of attacking her mother with a knife to steal her car and drive to Canada with three friends. The 15-year-old had attended Northwest High School in far north Fort Worth with Jennifer Bailey’s boyfriend, police have said. In October, state District Judge Jean Boyd closed a hearing in Fort Worth for the 15-year-old to determine what actions authorities would take against the teen. After the hearing, Boyd also issued a gag order. Jennifer Bailey’s 14-year-old brother had been in juvenile custody, but Denton County authorities said they couldn’t comment on his status because he is a juvenileDOMINGO RAMIREZ JR. 817-390-7763
