HALTOM CITY -- A jailer has been fired after an internal investigation into allegations that he used excessive force against a detainee in the Haltom City Jail in January.

The jailer, whom police did not identify, was terminated last month after a two-month police investigation. He started working for the department in November 2007 and has appealed his firing, officials said.

Police have declined to provide any documents or details about what happened Jan. 13 at the Haltom City Law Enforcement Center.

A surveillance camera captured the incident, but police officials have asked the Texas attorney general office for a ruling on a request by the Star-Telegram for a copy of the video.

It was reported in January that the jailer and a detainee were treated for minor injuries after the scuffle. The jailer was placed on administrative leave with pay in January.

A criminal case against the jailer is scheduled to be presented to a Tarrant County grand jury next month, according to officials with the Tarrant County district attorney's office.
