A 40-year-old woman received bumps and scratches Monday as she tried to wrestle her purse away from a teenage girl in a car that was speeding out of a grocery store parking lot in northeast Fort Worth, police said.

The girl, accompanied by two other girls in the blue Ford Focus, got away, said Lt. Paul Henderson, police spokesman.

The incident was reported at 5:35 p.m. at the Kroger store, 1050 Bridgewood Drive.

While loading groceries into her car, the woman noticed the Focus pull up alongside her.

A girl, about 16 to 18 years old, asked the woman for money to help repair her sister's tire, Henderson said.

"The victim told her that she did not have any money," he said, "and that she paid using a credit card."

But the girl got out of the Focus and "grabbed the victim's purse that was sitting on the bumper of her car," Henderson said.

The girl got back into the car which started to drive away, but the woman ran after it and tried to pull her purse through the open passenger window, Henderson said.

"The driver increased speed as the victim fought with the young woman in the passenger seat," he said. "She finally let go as the hatchback turned out of the parking lot."

The suspects are described as three black teenage girls ranging in age from 15 to 18.

"They are not believed to be connected to any of the recent elderly robberies that have occurred in the area," Henderson said.

Police in recent weeks have investigated several incidents in which thieves targeted elderly people in east and northeast Fort Worth.

The victims, just returning from area grocery stores, were attacked while trying to bring groceries into their homes or garages. No arrests in those crimes have been reported.
