Frigid Canadian air is set to make back-to-back appearances in North Texas this week, according to the National Weather Service.
Monday might see the region's highest temperatures this week -- about 65 degrees. But watch out for freezing temperatures overnight, courtesy of a cold front dragging along some dry arctic air."This is just a piece of cold air already bottled up in Canada," said Jason Dunn, a weather service meteorologist. "We have a piece that has broken off and it's coming south."It should be below freezing pretty much everywhere tonight."Temperatures, he added, probably won't get out of the high 20s overnight.Tuesday will be sunny, but the mercury will likely stay in the low 50s, Dunn said.Wednesday will see a slight warming back into the lower 60s, Dunn said, but the daytime highs on Thursday and Friday will be the coldest this week -- only in the 40s.That's because a new cold front late Wednesday will deliver another pulse of arctic air.The winds Wednesday will start out from the south, about 5 to 10 mph during the day.Later, however, they'll shift from out of the north at about 15 to 20 mph and some gusts could gust could be as high as 25 mph, the weather service said. Both blasts of cold air will come from the same area of northern Canada where temperatures were 50 degree below 0 on Monday, Dunn said.If you chose to live in Texas to avoid winter's wrath, take heart. It will be dry all week in North Texas, the weather service said. Also, the two cold fronts will be much harsher to the eastern portions of the United States, Dunn said."The way the upper level pattern is, the brunt of that cold air will be to the east of us," Dunn said. For example, it's not expected to get out of the teens late this week in Pittsburgh, Pa. Temperatures on Sunday, according to the weather service, will warm to the mid 20s with a chance for snow during the AFC championship game between the Steelers and Baltimore Ravens.Bill Miller, 817-390-7684
