Police in Houston initially thought they were responding to a hit-and-run collision, but what unfolded early Saturday morning near the town of Jersey Village was a lot more involved.
Houston police say a sex trafficking victim is recovering in a local hospital after being assaulted by her "pimp," who collapsed suddenly and died after an altercation with a good Samaritan, according to KPRC.
The victim, a woman originally from Wisconsin, told police the man who trafficked her from Wisconsin to Houston was assaulting her in a club on the 14600 block of Hempstead Road just after 2 a.m. When she left, the pimp followed, and continued to hit her outside.
That's when a good Samaritan intervened, according to KTRK.
But it wasn't that first attempt to convince the pimp to let her go that won her freedom. After the good Samaritan approached the pimp, they started arguing.
The pimp reached into the back of his waistband and told the good Samaritan he was going to shoot him, so the good Samaritan got back into his dark-colored pickup truck to drive away.
But as he began to pull away from the scene, the woman tried to jump into the moving truck. The pimp grabbed her by her hair, according to the Houston Chronicle, pulling her back toward him, and the pair were thrown to the ground.
The pimp hit his head on the concrete as he fell.
Houston police officer Robert Klementich told the Chronicle the pimp then rose to his feet, stumbled across the street and collapsed on the opposite shoulder. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman was in stable condition after suffering minor injuries while being assaulted. She was taken to a local hospital.
The good Samaritan fled the scene, the Chronicle reported. According to KPRC, police are asking that he contact the Houston Police Department in order to give his account of what happened.
He is not considered a suspect.
