What could be the worst rendition of the national anthem yet was perpetrated on the unsuspecting residents of Summit County in Utah last week.
The YouTube recording of the regrettable event has drawn more than 200,000 views as of this afternoon.
“It was worse in person,” one YouTube commenter said.
Said another: “I demand an apology for that abomination.”
“Wow. Makes Roseanne Barr’s rendition sound good by comparison,” commenter Bubba Sizemore posted.
Remember that one? Roundly booed:
For good reason.
Ms. Gautney’s performance occurred at the Demolition Derby, appropriately enough. Soon it went viral.
Poor thing, Gautney was mortified. She was her own worst critic.
“I am incredibly sorry for the way Saturday’s performance unfolded,” she said in a Facebook apology. “I am extremely embarrassed by my performance. I know it sounds absolutely horrific, terrifying, disgusting & disgraceful. I accept responsibility and would like to just move forward and make it right.”
She said she meant no disrespect and had intended to perform a “slower, more sultry” rendition of the anthem, “one that I thought would fit my unique voice best. ... It was slow, terrible and VERY VERY EMBARRASSING!” she wrote.
“Moving forward and learning from this experience is all that I want.”
We do too.
