A Hurst man set his house on fire and shot himself in the head Sunday afternoon after assaulting his girlfriend, police said.
Hurst police were called at 3:43 p.m. Sunday about a family violence assault in the 800 block of Crystal Lane, according to a statement from the department. The woman told police that her boyfriend assaulted her and then threatened to burn the house down and kill himself if she went to police, according to the news release.
Police said the man walked out of the house but ran back in when he saw the officers.
“The officers attempted to contact the suspect, but he would not respond. After officers heard possible gunshots from inside the house, the house began to burn,” the release says.

The man, who won’t be identified until the Tarrant County medical examiner notifies his family, was found dead inside the house with a gunshot in the head, police said.
The Hurst Fire Department, with assistance from local agencies, put out the fire. It did not spread to nearby homes, police said.
Hurst fire and police departments are continuing the investigation.
