Man found hanging in Fort Worth jail cell has died

The 23-year-old man was found unresponsive in his jail cell Aug. 18 following his arrest on accusations of assault and interfering with an emergency call.

A 23-year-old Cleburne man hospitalized since being found hanging in his Fort Worth jail cell in an apparent suicide attempt earlier this month has died.

Gregory Hooper was pronounced dead at 3:27 p.m. Sunday at John Peter Smith Hospital.

Hooper was arrested by Fort Worth police early Aug. 18 on accusations that he had tried to choke his girlfriend and interfered with an emergency call.

That same morning, Hooper apparently attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself inside his Fort Worth jail cell at 350 W. Belknap St., according to a police report.

Hooper was found by jail personnel during normal rounds, said Sgt. William Hix in an email.

Hooper used the drawstring from the athletic shorts he was wearing to hang himself. He was resuscitated by medical personnel and taken to JPS in serious condition, the report states.
