A woman holding a weapon was critically wounded Saturday night by a Weatherford patrol officer who had gone to check on her after a report that she was threatening suicide, authorities said Sunday.

The woman, whom Weatherford police did not identify, was in critical condition Sunday at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.

A resident called a dispatcher shortly before 10:30 p.m. Saturday requesting a welfare check on a middle-age woman at a home in the 1300 block of Foster Street in Weatherford. The caller said a woman there was threatening to commit suicide.

An officer arrived and tried to make contact with the woman, Weatherford police Lt. Chris Crawford said Sunday in a news release.

The woman came to the door with a weapon and the officer shot her, Crawford said. Police also did not release the name of the officer.

Weatherford police detectives and the Texas Rangers are investigating.
