ARLINGTON The Municipal Office Tower in downtown Arlington was temporarily on lockdown this morning while hazardous material crews investigated an envelope containing a white powdery substance.

The envelope, addressed to the city, was found by employees in the 6th floor mail room around 11 a.m., Arlington fire spokesman Lt. Lee Tovar said. Residents and city employees were asked to shelter in place while the Arlington Fire Department’s hazardous material crews tested the powder and checked out those who had come in contact with the envelope, Tovar said.

The powder, though not identified, was determined not to be harmful, Tovar said.

"The good news is it came out negative," Tovar said of testing.

The building, 101 S. Mesquite St, houses the Arlington Municipal Court and other city departments.
