Burglary suspect shot by Fort Worth police officer

Police said the suspect pointed a firearm at police officer

A burglary suspect was shot by a Fort Worth police officer Friday morning after pointing a firearm at the officer as he was attempting to flee a house he had entered, police said.

The suspect, who was not identified, died at an area hospital after being transported for treatment, said Fort Worth police Sgt. Raymond Bush.

The shooting took place when two Fort Worth police officers were called to the 2000 block of Loving Avenue in north Fort Worth at about 8:30 a.m. They went to the house on a report of a burglary, Bush said.

“While officers were en route, they received an update that the suspect was in the house,” Bush said.

The officers arrived at 8:38 a.m. One officer went to the backyard, Bush said.

“He saw a suspect coming out the back door,” Bush said. “The suspect had a gun in his hand. The suspect pointed the gun at the officer.”

Bush said the officer, whose name is not being released, then fired his gun multiple times.

“The suspect was hit several times,” Bush said.

The number of times the officer fired his weapon was not released.

Bush said the suspect was taken to an area hospital for treatment and later died.

“The family of the house and both officers were uninjured,” Bush said. Somone answering the phone at the Loving Avenue home said the residents had no comment on the incident.

The case is being reviewed by the police department. The police officer who fired the shots is on administrative leave, which is standard procedure during a review of this type, Bush said.

“This is a critical police incident,” Bush said, adding that due to the nature of the investigation the department would not be releasing anymore information as of noon Friday.

Bush said this case bears no resemblance to the Jerry Waller case. In that high-profile case, the 72-year-old Waller died after being shot several times by a Fort Worth policeman who responded to a burglary call at the wrong house.
