Fire destroys east Fort Worth church

Investigators remained on the scene Friday of the Greater Canaan Baptist Church in east Fort Worth to determine what started the fire.

Firefighters are still trying to determine what caused a fire that burned down an east Fort Worth church.

Firefighters were alerted to the fire in the 1600 block of Effie Street shortly before 5 a.m. Friday. When firefighters arrived, flames were shooting through the roof of the Greater Canaan Missionary Baptist Church, said Battalion Chief Richard Harrison.

As the fire spread and grew in intensity, firefighters were pulled from the interior of the building and ordered to attack the blaze from outside, Harrison said.

No one was injured in the blaze, and the fire was under control by 5:45 a.m., he said.

Damage to the building is estimated at more than $415,000, he said.
