Stunned classmates shared their grief on Twitter Sunday after 17-year-old Lelys Leyva-Monreal died early Saturday after falling out of a window of a moving SUV on South Cooper Street.

The teen was lying in the roadway at about 2:45 a.m. with three people tending to her when officers arrived, police spokeswoman Tiara Richard said. Officers learned that five people were in the SUV and heading south on Cooper Street when Leyva-Monreal started hanging out of an open window.

Richard said officers believe that one of her friends tried to pull her back inside. Leyva-Monreal was hit by the SUV after falling.

The driver stopped the SUV and let the other three passengers out but returned to the car and drove away, police said. Leyva-Monreal was driven by ambulance to Medical Center of Arlington and died shortly afterward from her injuries.

Leyva-Monreal’s friends remember her as a fun, independent woman. Her Twitter home page has “Leave a little sparkle wherever you go” below her name. Friends posted photos of the memorial vigil conducted Saturday night.

“Lelys was the type of person that you knew you were going to have an adventure with,” classmate Colette Sandoval said. “People were often quick to judge her, but she had the sweetest heart. She was a very loyal friend and would stand up for you if needed.”

Classmate and friend Megan Holt said that Leyva-Monreal was the “life of the party.”

“We watched scary movies and ate Chinese food all night, and I just remember that as one of the funnest nights we had.”

Witnesses helped investigators find the driver, police said, but no other details were provided. Alcohol is being investigated as a factor in the death.
