Johnson County deputies raided a cockfight Saturday night near Alvarado, arresting 17 people and seizing 97 birds, the sheriff’s department reported on Monday.

Many other people fled, Johnson County sheriff’s Lt. Tim Jones said in a news release.

“Besides finding the birds, deputies found a large amount of cockfighting paraphernalia as well as a small amount of drugs, alcohol, gambling paraphernalia, charts and a pistol,” Jones said.

Six birds have died of their wounds, and three to five others may need to be euthanized, he said.

The cockfight was at 9332 Sally’s Way in rural Johnson County.

Investigators have determined that three of the people arrested Saturday will face charges of cruelty to nonlivestock animals and two with cockfighting charges, Jones said. The rest will get Class C misdemeanor citations of attending a cockfight as a spectator.
