An employee of a Red Wing shoe store on South Cooper Street was found dead in the back of the store Tuesday afternoon, the victim of an apparent robbery, police said.
The store’s back door was ajar, but the front door was locked, said Sgt. Jeff Houston, a police spokesman.
“There were items missing from the store,” Houston said.
On Wednesday, investigators released surveillance video of the suspect and images of a light-colored, possibly champagne-colored, Toyota Tacoma pickup with a lift and oversized tires. The truck was recorded on video traveling north on South Cooper Street, Houston said.
The Tarrant County medical examiner’s office had not released the slain man’s name by late Tuesday night. Houston said he was 22.
The shopping center is in the 3100 block of South Cooper. Workers in businesses nearby told police they heard what sounded like a gunshot about 1:50 p.m., Houston said.
He said he did not know whether a gun was found or whether there was any other evidence of a shooting, such as spent shell casings.
Investigators were checking security cameras for images of the assailant. Houston urged anyone who might have videos from the area to get them to police.
When asked about reports of a rough-looking man peering in the windows of neighboring businesses earlier Tuesday afternoon, Houston said he did not have information about that.
Houston said there have been no similar crimes recently in the area.
“There are no [crime] sprees in this part of town,” he said. “This looks like a one-time thing. Hopefully it stays that way.”
