A man died at a hospital overnight after firefighters pulled him from a burning apartment.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was found unresponsive in a first-floor unit shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday at the Springbrook Apartments in the 6500 block of Normandy Road.

He was taken to John Peter Smith hospital after emergency medical personnel attempted first aid, according to a Fort Worth Fire Department news release.

Smoke was showing from the unit when firefighters arrived, the release said. The man was pronounced dead moments after he arrived at the hospital.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the cause of the fire was accidental, most likely triggered by food left on the stove, the release said.

It was not known whether there was a working smoke detector inside the apartment.
