An icy patch in the road may have played a factor in a two-vehicle accident Sunday north of Weatherford that left one woman dead and five others seriously injured.
Maria Najar-Aquilar, 39, of Las Vegas died at the scene, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner’s website.
Najar-Aquilar was a front-seat passenger in a 2005 Saturn carrying four other people when it collided with a 2002 Nissan Xterra on Farm Road 1885 near Farm Road 920, said Sgt. Lonny Haschel of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The driver of the Xterra, Danna Leary, 34, of Tulsa, was going west on Farm Road 1885 when she lost control of the vehicle because of a slick spot in the road, Haschel said. The Xterra crossed into the eastbound lane and struck the Saturn.
Leary was transported to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth with serious injuries.
The driver of the Saturn, Aurelia Najar, 34, of Las Vegas, was taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital, and three children in the Saturn, ages 3, 9 and 10, were taken to Cook Children's Medical Center with serious injuries, Haschel said.
The accident is under investigation, and the other names have not been released, he said. The National Weather Service issued warnings for possible ice on the roadways Sunday.
