A 14-year-old boy was fatally shot in the head Thursday night by man who told officers that he didn’t realize the gun in his hand was loaded, police said.

The man, 24, and the teen were among visitors at a house in the 3000 block of Hanger Avenue in east Fort Worth when the shooting occurred about 11:45 p.m. Thursday, police said.

“The investigation revealed that several individuals were in a residence,” homicide Sgt. Cheryl Johnson said. The man “had a weapon in the room. The male pulled the trigger, shooting the victim.”

The man was questioned and released, but the investigation continues, Johnson said.

The teen was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital where he died Friday afternoon, police said.

The Tarrant County medical examiner’s office had not released the youth’s name or the cause and manner of his death by late Friday.
