Weatherford Kangaroos (1-0) at Irving Nimitz Vikings (1-0) preview
▪ When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
▪ Key players: Weatherford - QB Bryce Burks, LB Zach Mohr. Nimitz - WR Sam Berry, LB Noah Spears.
▪ Outlook: The Kangaroos are off to a good start for a second straight season, defeating Lubbock Coronado 29-19 at home last week, and last season's 3-0 start included a come-from-behind 28-27 home win over the Vikings. Ultimately, last season ended with seven straight district losses, but coach Weldon Nelms is hoping lots of returning experience will lead to a stronger finish this season. Burks has the ability to lead the Kangaroos, who run a fast-paced offense and brought back six starters, into the end zone with frequency. He passed for 295 of Weatherford's 327 total yards in the win over Coronado. Running back Jeqwan Brownlee, who missed all of last season with an injury, had a fine return with 51 yards rushing and 76 receiving with a pair of touchdowns in the opener.
The Weatherford defense, which returned eight starters, surrendered 330 yards to Coronado, but also posted three interceptions, one returned 40 yards for a touchdown by Michael Green. The Vikings, meanwhile, are seeking a second straight playoff appearance, something not common at Nimitz. Nimitz's season-opening come-from-behind 31-20 win over Keller Timber Creek included a pair of late touchdowns and some solid late defense of its own.
