Things are changing for the Millsap football program, and not a minute too soon as the Bulldogs get ready to kick off the 2015 football season.
“We are completely rebuilding this program,” said head football coach Jacob Johnson, who is about to begin his first season at the helm.
“Every facet, from practice expectations to our style of training. We have eight seniors who are working extremely hard to set a new course for Millsap Football.”
Coach Johnson said Danny Kettler will be playing fullback and that he will be a “good one,” but it doesn’t stop there.
Never miss a local story.
“I feel we have several guys who can carry the ball well, including: CJ Holloway, Spencer Mitchell, Kody Wages, Dylan Dalhauser and Jordan Richardson,” he added.
Up front Johnson said he looks for seniors Jared Spinler, Coleman Franklin and Riley Russell to pave the way. Junior Cole Tipton, he said, is also a solid returning starter with a lot of potential as well.
“Defensively, safety Lane Rich should be an impact player, along with linebacker Kody Wages, linebacker CJ Holloway and defensive end Jordan Richardson, defensive back Josh Hicks, and defensive lineman Danny Kettler,” Johnson said.
“Nick Lucia will be our quarterback this year and I am extremely excited about his ability and his leadership. He has proven himself a young man worthy to call the signals, and I think he could have a big year.”
Johnson said as far as improvement from last season, they are already physically much stronger, but in building a program, it takes time to build the mental strength as well.
As for district 2-3A Div. II, the powerhouse picked to finish on tip is the Cisco Lobos despite not returning many starters from last years perfect 7-0 district run. The Lobos, a perennial power, finished 13-1 overall and reached the state quarterfinals.
The district also includes Eastland, which finished 11-2 and reached the third round of the playoffs in 2014.
“I have watched all the film from last year and we have a strong district, but I consider this an advantage,” Johnson said. “If you can make it through you are definitely battle tested!”
