The Weatherford Lady Kangaroos continued their winning ways Saturday, running their victory streak to five with a 44-34 win against visiting Arlington Martin, one of the top teams in District 4-6A.
Anna Jefferson-Polk led the Lady Kangaroos (6-3) with 27 points. It came on the heels of her scoring 28 in a 47-43 victory against Brock a few days earlier.
"It's been great to watch the girls fill and figure out their roles, and adjusting to a new style of play," Weatherford coach Darryn Shearmire said. "Anna is by far one of the best I've coached, and that is saying a ton.
"Gabbie (Huggins) raised our team stock 10-fold with her defensive presence. Tyara (Buckner) and Kara (Rothrock) have been improving their game on both ends and their decision making has gradually gotten better each game."
Though District 3-6A play doesn't begin until Dec. 13 at Haltom, Shearmire believes the roll his team is on indicates they could make some noise in the league. The Lady Kangaroos returned one player, Jefferson-Polk, from last season's playoff team.
"We may in some form or fashion be able to challenge for a top spot in district, whereas I wasn't sure we could be a contender at all early on," he said. "Just a fun group of coachable kids that work to do it right. That's all you can ask for as a coach."
BROCK WINS AT AAC
The Brock Eagles were once again treated to a game on the court of the Dallas Mavericks, playing at the American Airlines Center Saturday. The Eagles improved to 5-0 with a 56-39 victory against Hillsboro.
Scott Thomas led Brock with 19 points, while Amery Hughes added 11.
"It's one that the kids will always remember, being able to say that they played on a NBA court," Brock coach Zach Boxell said.
