The last time the Weatherford Lady Kangaroos advanced past the opening round of the volleyball playoffs, many students in the high school had yet to be born.
For the first time in 16 years, the Lady Roos won a playoff match, defeating Arlington 25-9, 25-12, 25-18. Weatherford (39-6) will next play El Paso Eastwood (29-12) in the area round, Thursday at 6 p.m. at Andrews High School.
"I am just super excited for the girls and the community," said Nick Gay, in his first season coaching the Lady Roos. "The girls have worked really hard to make this season a special one, and we are ready for the next challenge."
London Austin-Roark led Weatherford with 11 kills and three blocks.
Elsewhere, the Peaster Lady Greyhounds (30-13) and Brock Lady Eagles (35-10) also both advanced with sweeps. Peaster defeated Nocona 25-14, 25-8, 25-11, while Brock downed Holliday 26-24, 25-22, 25-17.
The Lady Eagles got a double-double from Parker King with 13 kills and 17 digs. The Lady Greyhounds got 16 kills and 13 digs from Kennedy Warren.
"I was pleased overall with our play," said Peaster coach Autumn Threet, whose team is seeking a third consecutive state tournament berth. "My seniors helped lead the way and my underclassmen stepped up and did a good job too."
Brock will play Comanche or Coahoma in the area round, while Peaster will face Tuscola Jim Ned or Breckenridge. Both matches will be later this week.
Tuesday night Aledo (32-13) will play Denton (11-20) in a Class 5A bidistrict match at Keller Central High School at 7 p.m. Millsap (25-12) will play Henrietta (31-12) in a Class 3A bidistrict match at Alvord High School at 7 p.m.
