The annual Coyote Jazz Fest is coming up on March 21, but before the day-long musical extravaganza, the Weatherford College Jazz Band will put on the Coyote Jazz Fest Concert on March 20 in the Alkek Fine Art Center at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m.
About a half dozen high school jazz ensemble performances and clinics will take place during the Friday festival. Ensembles perform from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m., followed by a WC Jazz Band clinic/concert and awards. The festival is open to the public.
Several schools have already completed registration to attend the festival including Castleberry High School in Fort Worth and North Ridge Middle School from Birdville ISD.
Phil Aikman, a retired high school band director and former Castleberry ISD fine arts director, will facilitate ensemble clinics, working with each group following their stage performance.
“The benefit of his expertise, not only for the student members of the respective ensembles but also for the directors, is worth the registration fee in and of itself,” said Cal Lewiston, fine arts and communications department chair. “Everyone involved will benefit from the experience and mastery of craft attained by Phil Aikman in his more than 40 year career.”
