High school students from surrounding schools flocked to the Weatherford College campus for the 12th Annual Coyote Area Math Championship Friday, Feb. 21, where they showed off their brain skills in pre-calculus and calculus.

Following individual and team tests, the students listened to Brent Hankins, a young professional who uses advanced math skills daily in his engineering career. A graduate of Stephenville High School, his former high school math teacher and current WC math instructor Delise Burrus introduced him to the students.

Hankins is currently employed at Peterbuilt where he develops electrical components to integrate into large big-rig style trucks, and he designs and builds concept vehicles. Burrus said introducing one of her former high school students was a special experience.

Following lunch, awards were presented to the top performing students. Teams received plaques while individuals received prizes including a TI 30X Scientific Calculator, Nikon Coolpix camera and a Nextbook 8-inch Android tablet. Plains Capital Bank underwrote the cost of the event including plaques, prizes and food.
