It’s February in Parker County and that can only mean one thing – time for the Rotary Club of Weatherford Pancake Supper.
For more than six decades the Rotary Club of Weatherford - every third week in February - comes together in a spirit of fellowship and goodwill; and to eat a mountain of pancakes.
The event itself helps support the Rotary Club’s effort to promote literacy and wellness programs within the greater Weatherford area. More specifically, the Pancake Supper is the club’s primary means of funding the scholarships it provides to students in Parker County, allowing them to pursue college degrees.
In the past 10 years, the club has awarded more than 100 students scholarships. The funds raised at the event also enable local Rotarians to support the communities local charities and service organizations such as Meals-On-Wheels. This past fall, the club sent funds to the Rockport area to assist with Hurricane Harvey Relief efforts.
Never miss a local story.
More than 1600 usually attend the event each year, according to Marnita Langford, Pancake Supper Coordinator and Rotary President-Elect.
"This event has always been a favorite of mine to attend," Marnita says. "Being a Parker County native, I always see several people that I know, and sometimes, this is that ‘one time a year’ that you run into each other. It’s just a great time to visit and share those memories. Besides, there’s nothing better than eating breakfast for dinner."
One of the highlights of the evening is the Pancake Eating Contest. The contestants usual consist of a representative from the fire department, police department or Sheriff’s office, WHS athlete and another community leader.
"This event would not be possible without our many sponsors," Langford adds. We want to extend our many thanks to each of them: WalMart of Weatherford; JRJ Construction; Compass Bank; First National Bank; Plains Capital Bank; Snow Garrett Williams; Jerry’s GMC Buick; Economic Development of Parker County; Hugh & Cissy Bradberry; KM Consulting; IHOP; Short Chef; Oak Farms; Quickprint; Hartness Printing; Iron Skillet; Texas Butane; and Adult & Teen Challenge.
This year’s event will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 20 from 5 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Weatherford High School Cafeteria. Tickets are $5 in advance or $8 at the door and may be purchased from any Weatherford Rotary Club member or at the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce.
