Make your yard a hummingbird haven

Migrating hummingbirds will soon be showing up in North Texas looking for a good meal and a place to nest. Your yard can provide that habitat if you know what the little visitors are looking for. Master Gardener Cynthia White will discuss hummingbirds and the native plants that attract them at the April 13 meeting in Weatherford of the Cross Timbers Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas.

Chandor Gardens Foundation hits the road with well known horticulturist

The Chandor Gardens Foundation is pleased to present Steven Chamblee - Chandor Gardens horticulturist - at a special event on April 29, at 711 West Lee Ave. in Weatherford. The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a picnic from Shep’s Place Food Truck. Beverages will be furnished, including beer and wine. At 7 p.m., Chamblee will speak on “Peace, Love & Milagros: Life Lessons From the Road. Tickets are $35 and available through the foundation website, http://www.chandorgardensfoundation.org.

Madison needs a family to love

Our Pet of the Week is the lovely Madison. This sweet girl is a 2yr old spayed Shepherd mix. Miss Madison is a happy, playful gal. She walks good on a leash and is okay with other dogs. This sweet gal has a lot of love to give and is hoping her fur-ever family comes along soon. Come meet Madison, she’ll steal your heart.

Brush up on your Texas facts with one of our area’s great storytellers, Jon Vandagriff

If it’s been a while since your last Texas history class, or if you’re new to the Lone Star State, there’s a great opportunity for you to learn about the legends, lessons and legacy left to all Texans. Doss After Dark presents Texas History beginning April 13 to May 4 at the Doss Heritage and Culture Center in Weatherford. The cost is $25 per participant. The class is being taught by longtime educator Jon Vandagriff. The class will meet on Thursday nights beginning at 5:30 p.m. Registration is available online at www.dosscenter.org or at the museum at 1400 Texas Drive in Weatherford.

Barbies, slinkies and CBRs...Oh my

Algebra students filled the Aledo Middle School multipurpose center recently to experience some of the most basic of algebraic concepts in a hands-on fashion. The teaching team of Betsy Denny, Keely Hulme, Matti Kruse, Bob Barr and Kara Jordan won a teaching innovation grant from the Aledo Education Foundation which brings students out of the classroom, and offers multiple opportunities to work together to collect and analyze data. The goal was to broaden and deepen their knowledge of basic linear functions by experiencing them in several practical activities.

Dirk will be a slam dunk in your home

Are you looking for a four legged friend? Dirk might be just the dog for you. This sweet little Lab mix is 4 yrs old and weighs 47 lbs. He is also heartworm negative. Dirk is friendly to everyone he meets, he likes children and is good with other doggies too. He is not good with livestock so no cows or goats please. Salad as a main course can be both healthy and delicious

These days who isn’t trying to be a little more health conscious? Studies seem to come out everyday warning us to watch what we eat or risk the consequences. In keeping with those warnings, my husband and I enjoy many of these salads, chalked full of proteins like chicken, avocado, turkey or bacon. Be sure and give one of these delicious recipes a try.

AMS history team off to state

The top entries from the AMS History Fair competed at The University of Texas at Arlington in the regional level for Texas History Day. Thirteen groups/individuals competed in five different categories including historical paper, website, performance, exhibit board and documentary. Eight groups or individuals placed in the top six, and two entries placed first. The two first-place winners advance to the state meet in Austin on April 29.

Move over! Mama needs a home

Mama is a fun loving female Heeler Mix who absolutely loves to play ball. You throw it, she will retrieve it and bring it right back to you every time. Aside from her ball playing skills Mama is a very friendly, lovable girl and she is heartworm negative too. This sweet gal would be a great addition to any family. She can be choosey ab out her doggie friends so if you have a dog already and you would like to meet Mama, please bring your dog along for a meet and greet.

New exhibit opens at Museum of Americas

Pottery of Mexico: Cultural Identities in Clay opens at the Museum of the Americas on April 4. This exhibit presents the ceramic traditions of Mexico, utilitarian, decorative, and ceremonial, from the 1920’s to the present. This special exhibit features spectacular pieces on loan from Fort Worth collector Hilda Horchler, including an intricate 2 ½- by-3 foot candelabra constructed with fantastic swirls, animals, and Mother and Child on a donkey at the center.
