After a nationwide search, Kevin Mitchell has been promoted to Grapevine Parks & Recreation director after serving in the assistant director’s role for years.

Mitchell was named following the retirement of Doug Evans.

Mitchell has been overseeing all aspects of the parks operations in Grapevine since November 2008. Prior to that, Mitchell held various roles with the city, including superintendent from 2001 to 2008, assistant superintendent from 2000 to 2001 and horticulturist/contract administrator from 1999 to 2000.

Many large projects were researched and managed by Mitchell in recent years, including Oak Grove Ballfield Complex — voted Sports Field of the Year by the Texas Turfgrass Association/2011 —Dove Waterpark, Dove Sprayground and Parr Park Sprayground.

A highlight, he said, has been his work with Casey’s Clubhouse, an all-inclusive playground. The playground was selected for the Merit Award by the American Society of Landscape Architecture, Texas chapter/2014.

“This unique playground boasts an incredible play environment for children of all capacities,” Mitchell said. “Whether they have limited abilities or not, this playground was designed for everyone to play together.”

Prior to his employment with Grapevine, Mitchell worked in the landscape, irrigation and horticulture arenas since the mid 1990s.

Mitchell is involved with numerous professional associations, including the American Baseball Coaches Association, American Public Garden Association, National Recreation & Park Association, Texas Amateur Athletic Federation, Texas Association of Public Gardens, Texas Municipal League, Texas Nursery & Landscape Association, Texas Recreation & Park Society (board member since 2004), Texas Recreation & Park Society (president 2012-2013), Texas Turfgrass Association and United States Tennis Association.

Mitchell has won numerous awards, including the Texas Recreation and Parks Society Park Professional of the Year in 2005 and Grapevine Garden Club Supporter of the Year in 2005.

“I’m looking forward to tackling many large and exciting projects in the coming years with my team,” Mitchell said. “I am passionate about the betterment of our community as we continue to grow and progress forward.”
