Chamber hosts UNT education series

Lessons include management, presentation skills, branding and more.

Southlake Chamber of Commerce is teaming up with the University of North Texas to bring higher education to local businesses.

The chamber is introducing its Professional Development Fridays education series through the spring.

Mark Guilbert, chamber president and CEO, said he wanted to bring continuing education to Southlake.

“It’s almost like going to college, but you don’t have to enroll, take the SAT and study,” he said. “It has the benefits of a lecture but without the requirements and commitments that classes would require.”

The series opens with a lesson on People Management from the university’s Don Powell on March 14. Other topics include presentation skills, recruitment and retention, customer service, branding and social media. Each lesson is provided by someone who teaches at the university.

To decide on the courses, the chamber surveyed members to find out what courses would be most desired.

The series, or individual courses, are available to non-members as well. The chamber asks those interested to register by March 7. Registration is available by calling the chamber or visiting its website.

The lectures run from 9-11 a.m. every other Friday until May 23.

Guilbert said the series is part of the chamber’s goal to increase education opportunities. It continues to hosts its monthly charter business series and will host a one-day satellite-based Leadercast. The latter is an online event that features presentations from international leaders.
