For the ninth consecutive year, the Carroll swim and dive team won the district championship on both the boys and girls sides, and coach Kevin Murphy said he could not be more proud of his athletes’ efforts at the competition.

The Dragons qualified 24 boys and 21 girls for region, and Murphy said he enjoyed being a part of this district meet as much as any he has been a part of in the past.

“Our Dragons were courageous, and grew and matured as they met their competition head-on, and came out on top,” Murphy said. “This meet, and the focus and efforts of all of our kids, made it my most encouraging and satisfying district meet since I arrived here nine years ago.”

Murphy said that he believes things are shaping up very well for the upcoming regional meet for Carroll.

“We're going to have some good competition at region,” Murphy said. “The Keller and Keller Central girls are good. The Flower Mound swimmers are good and a Coppell and Mansfield have some good swimmers. We've got some good swimmers all the way around that will be looking to claim state spots.

“We hope to advance all of our relays to the state meet. We may not win every relay, but we're sure going to try. We think team-wise (we’re) the favorites on both sides in both boys and girls, but that's not what the game is all about. It's about advancing kids to the state high school meet.”

As to whether or not anything less than a region championship on both sides would be considered a success, Murphy said there is one such scenario.

“At this moment, based on what I know, I would be surprised if we did not win the meet,” Murphy said. “We are hoping to get all of our relays out, we have a diver who has a great opportunity, and then we have anywhere from eight to 12 individuals on each side that should get to state.

“If we do all of that and win region, it's a successful meet. If we do all that and somebody beats us, but we still do all of that, well then, congratulations to them. That's a good job. So it's more about us going there and trying to excel than winning it all.”

The region meet will be held at the Keller Natatorium this weekend.
