Carroll looking strong coming out of holiday break

Both of the area hockey teams have winning records through the first two-plus months.

The Carroll varsity hockey team wrapped up a strong showing through the first 11 games of the season on Dec. 19 with a 7-4, come-from-behind victory against Coppell.

The Dragons improved to a record of 8-2-1 on the season with the win and sit in third place in the Varsity division standings.

Coppell took a 2-0 lead into the second period in their match, and after Justin Mitchell scored early in the second period on an assist from Chris Barrett, the Cowboys scored twice more to make it 4-1.

The Dragons came roaring back on an unassisted goal from Barrett, a goal from Tyler Culp with an assist from Griffin McManus and an unassisted power-play goal from Blake Wood to tie the game at four after two periods.

In the third, it was all Carroll, as Aaron Driggs scored twice in the period and McManus also picked up a goal for the Dragons.

Mitchell, Culp, Wood and Ben Bledsoe earned assists in the third period for Carroll.

Barrett leads the team in points (20) and assists (12), and Driggs (9) is the leading goal scorer for the Dragons.

Christian Westerberg leads the team in wins with eight on the season.

Carroll will play Plano Senior at the Plano U.S. arena at 7:45 p.m. on Thursday.

Grapevine/Colleyville Heritage has good showing to start season

The Grapevine/Colleyville Heritage varsity hockey team has had a good showing through its first 10 games of the season, going 6-4 overall, including a 7-4 victory over Denton County on Dec. 19.

Sam Yujuico got things going for Grapevine/Colleyville early on in the game, on assists from Corbin Hutchings and Christopher Rodo.

Rodo scored the next two goals for the varsity team, the second one assisted by Spencer Stuckeman, to make it 3-0, and Grapvine/Colleyville Heritage led 3-1 at the end of one.

Dylon Penick scored first in the second half on assists from Tommy Stuckeman and Kevin Koehler to extend the varsity's lead back to three, and after Denton County scored a goal of its own, Matthew Kruse scored on an assist from Spencer Stuckeman.

Leading 5-3 heading into the third period, Ethan Smith and Penick each scored for Grapevine/Colleyville Heritage to give the game to the varsity squad.

Chris Finn assisted on the Smith goal.

Rodo leads Grapevine/Colleyville Heritage in goals (7), assists (10) and points (17) and James Myers leads the team in wins with three.

Grapevine/Colleyville Heritage will play Coppell at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Farmers Branch Miller Arena.
