Pumpkins, Jack-o’-lanterns and gourds, oh my!
Hundreds of pumpkin carvers gathered at Grapevine Mills mall last Thursday to take part in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for most pumpkins carved simultaneously with 1,500 participants.
Turnout was not as good as hoped for because planners had to move the event up a day at the last minute due to severe weather forecasts for the weekend.
Guinness results are not tallied immediately, so they’ll have to wait to find out how they did.
Some families and children dressed up in Halloween costumes. Attendees received a pumpkin and a pumpkin carving tool set.
At the event’s end, the parking lot was aglow with carved pumpkins.
Krista Gaddy’s family came to cheer on her son Cole, who had been begging her to take him to the event since he heard about it.
“He’s always loved pumpkin carving,” Gaddy said of her 11-year-old sixth-grader. “He thinks it’s really cool.”
Gaddy said her son was hopeful that his picture and name would be in the Guinness records.
The Bedford woman said she told her son, “I can’t promise you that.”
