Students at Carroll Senior High School observed Veterans Day on Nov. 11 with a morning assembly in a gym packed with students, staff, faculty and visiting veterans.
The keynote speaker was Dr. Gunnar West, a veteran and Dragon father, who spoke about his military experiences and that of his family members. Leaders of the Carroll Senior High School student council also spoke during the event at which the veterans were asked to rise and be recognized for their service.
West, who served in the army during the Vietnam conflict, gave an impassioned speech about his uncle, Ralph Rittacco, who gave his life on D-DAY during World War II. West served in the US Army from 1978 until 1986 in the first infantry division.
West’s father also served in the military during World War II after being drafted.
A Dallas surgeon, West’s daughter, Julianna, graduated from Carroll ISD and played soccer. His son, Colt, is a senior and on the Dragon football team.
