Man critically injured after jumping off Bedford bridge

Witnesses told Bedford police that the man walked onto a Bedford bridge and then jumped.

A 37-year-old man was critically injured Thursday afternoon after he jumped off a Bedford freeway bridge onto a road construction site, Bedford police said.

The man, whom authorities did not identify, was being flown by helicopter ambulance to a local hospital.

The incident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday at Murphy Drive and Texas 121.

Witnesses told police that they saw the man walk onto the Murphy Drive/Westpark Way bridge, jump off and fall about 29 feet onto a highway construction site on Texas 183.

“Because that area was under construction, he wasn’t hit by vehicles,” Bedford police Lt. David Smith said Thursday.

Police did not have an estimate of how far the man fell.
