One of A.J. Wray’s favorite songs is “Another Day in Paradise” by local artist A.J. Wray.
The 14-year-old Colleyville native recently released his debut album featuring the title track. While he’s been singing and dancing for years he said there’s something different about having an album.
“I do feel a little different,” Wray said. “I feel like I’m doing what I’ve always wanted to do.”
The album features seven tracks of high energy, pop, Christian music.
Never miss a local story.
There’s also a “Footloose” cover.
“It crossed different generations, you know,” he said. “I needed a song that everybody would know and that everybody would want to get up and dance to.”
Wray, who grew up listening to mostly Christian tunes, said the influence is important to his music and his life.
“Well, what has been happening is it has been keeping me straight on my walk of pride,” said the Grapevine Faith student.
Wray got his start performing at Gateway Church in Southlake. While he learned the basics of performing for a crowd there, he said he loves the feeling he gets from a live performance.
“I get to meet all the people and I get to perform — what I've always dreamed of doing in front of everybody,” he said. “Its’ a really, really cool experience and it’s really fun.”
His musical inspirations include other Christian artists he’s worked with and his own family. His younger brother Gabe is featured in the “Another Day in Paradise” music video.
“I would say my family is a really big influence,” he said. “We all have a singing ability.”
Wray’s days are pretty busy in between touring around the world — he’ll be in London and Tel Aviv, Israel this month — he still finds time for school and family.
When he does have free time he likes to go up to his family’s ranch.
“I like to go up to my ranch and I like to four wheel, fish, shoot guns,” he said.
As he continues his music career he holds on to the values his parents taught him: honor God, do your best, don’t quit and don’t be afraid to take a risk.
