The grand goal of making home improvements to 40 homes in five cities during a two-day effort sounds ambitious, but the folks at 6 Stones who are spearheading the effort planned for Friday and Saturday have faith it will succeed.
Now in its seventh year, the fix-up program — Community Powered Revitalization, or CPR — seeks volunteer manpower to help homeowners who are unable to make necessary home repairs as it aims to revitalize and fortify the community.
“Our hope is to not only be a catalyst of hope for the homeowners but to allow the volunteers to have a great experience giving back to others,” said Brian Cramer, the 6 Stones director of CPR.

According to CPR spokeswoman Teresa Grady, 1,200 to 1,400 volunteers are expected to report for duty between 8 and 8:30 a.m. at the Campus West facility at 209 N. Industrial Blvd. where they will have breakfast, meet their team members and find out which home they will be working on. Volunteers can choose which day they want to work when they sign up.
“People working on homes can expect to do yard cleanup, scraping, priming and painting the house, and some minor wood repair. All major wood replacement will be done before the event,” Grady said. Individuals who want to help but not at the home sites can choose jobs such as registration, event set-up, lunch delivery, supply receiving in the afternoon, planting and food prep.
Since the program began in 2009 (it was originally called Euless Revitalization), more than 340 homes have received the benefits of the work. In Hurst, the 100th-home milestone will be reached during this event.
During work days, breakfast, drinks, snacks and lunch are provided to each volunteer. “This event, we are asking volunteers to bring a couple of canned goods each,” said Grady. “It’s not mandatory, but we’d love to use this event to help stock our food pantry, 6 Stones’ New Hope Center.”
“We supply tools and materials, but this event is our biggest yet, so we would love for people to bring some things to help out, especially ladders, yard tools —anything they’d like to use. Work gloves are always a good idea, too,” said Grady.
Homeowners who want to apply for assistance through the CPR program can contact their city at any time during the year.
Register to volunteer online at www.6stones.org/cprheb until noon April 16. Walk-up registration is accepted on both days of the event. Volunteers must be 12 or older, and teams of 10 or more should sign up in advance.
Ambucs dinner, dance, auction helps those with disabilities
A party Saturday hosted by the Mid Cities Chapter of Ambucs sounds like a good time. The charity is back for its annual Boot Scootin’ Dinner & Auction and invites the community to join an evening of fun at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1319 Brown Trail, in Bedford.
“Our 11th annual Boot Scootin’ Dinner and Auction will be a night of great music and entertainment, fantastic food, dancing, and terrific auction items,” said event chairman Cliff Bauerle.
Want to learn how to line dance? Then come early at 5:30 p.m. for a happy hour and some free dance lessons. Afterward, guests will be served a mouthwatering steak dinner provided by Outback Steak House in Grapevine. Then, in a clever twist, scrumptious homemade desserts will be auctioned to the highest bidder.
Vocalist Holley Primm will perform pop hits, and actor/singer Dennis O’Neill will round out the show for a wonderful night full of entertainment. Bring your money to buy a chance to win a 50-inch HD television and to shop for some nifty swag in a silent auction.
A spotlight moment comes when the group presents Amtryke adaptive tricycles to children who will be able to ride their own bike for the first time. “It’s laughter and tears of joy at its very best,” said Bauerle.
Funds raised will help Ambucs continue their mission of creating mobility and independence for people with disabilities. One of their signature projects is providing the therapeutic tricycles to children, adults and veterans unable to operate a traditional bike.
Chunk your junk during Bedford Clean Up Day on Saturday
The Bedford Beautification Commission wants to encourage businesses and local residents to — uh, well, beautify. Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon has been designated for the annual effort to clean out unwanted stuff and spiff up the appearance of the city.
The commission “is again partnering with volunteers, businesses and interested residents for the annual Clean Up Bedford Day/Chunk Your Junk event,” said commission Chairwoman Patty Sinclair. “Groups will work together to pick up trash in parks, areas along streets, vacant lots and other properties.”
Residents can dispose of their nonhazardous junk at the Meadow Park Athletic Complex, 3200 Meadow Park Drive. Proof of residency will be required. Hazardous items will be collected on Crud Day, April 21.
Scout troops, homeowners associations, community organizations, employees of local businesses and residents have participated in the annual event for the past 10 years and are expected to help out again this year.
“Volunteers are needed and are asked to sign up online, meet at Meadow Park at 8 a.m. to pick up supplies and be assigned to a team and an area to clean,” said Jeff Florey from the city staff.
“Specific areas targeted for cleaning are major streets, parks, parking lots, City Hall, the police and fire stations, as well as the post offices, library, Old Bedford School and other public areas.”
Spring craft show Saturday
Shop for a good cause at the spring craft show Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. hosted by St. Philip Preschool of Hurst. The school will again present the show featuring local artisans, crafters and popular retail merchandise.
According to Cindy Baren, director of the school, the show will have arts and crafts booths along with exhibits selling well known products such as Origami Owl, Tupperware, Scentsy, Thirty-One, DoTerra and Premier Jewelry.
