A man walked into an EZ Mart in Marshall on July 18 holding a chain hooked to a truck, placed the chain around an ATM and ordered his accomplice in the truck to pull away.
But the ATM simply fell over, and after feeble attempts to yank it from the store, the suspects jumped back into the truck and fled as a clerk and customer watched from a counter nearby.
Police say they believe the two would-be thieves tried to snatch another ATM Monday in Grapevine — with the same result.
On Thursday, police released a video of the Grapevine attempt and the unsuccessful attempt in Marshall in hopes that someone will recognize the suspects.
In the Marshall case, the video shows a suspect putting a chain around an ATM with his face covered. The ATM just tumbles over when the truck tries to pull it out, and an accomplice gets out to help.
The suspects push and shove and then give up.
At one point, the store clerk seems to glance at the first suspect as he begins to hook up the ATM but then waits on a customer who had walked up to the counter.
Soon afterward the suspects flee.
In the Grapevine case, the video shows a truck smashing the front door of Pluckers Wing Bar on Cross Roads Drive.
The thieves smash into the front door several times, but flee when they observe a patrol officer, and lead police on a brief chase that reaches speeds of 120 mph on Texas 114 before officers call off the pursuit.
Police later found the stolen truck in Irving.
Anyone with information in either case should call Grapevine police at 817-410-3200.
