The Mansfield varsity hockey team took its second win over Carroll this season with a dominating 5-2 win on Sunday. The first game of the season, against the always-tough Carroll program, was a 2-1 win.
In the Sunday game, James Boisvert scored a hat trick for Mansfield to help pace the team with the three goals. Cameron Bickford and James Sullivan also scored for Mansfield. Sullivan also had three assists while Kyle Manning added two.
Mansfield kept plenty of pressure on all night, out-shooting Carroll 31-14.
“It was a big win,” said Mansfield head coach Steve Schneider. “We’re back on track and playing good hockey. We had 17 days off but we rented ice over the holidays to practice. Hockey is a unique sport,” he said, “as you can’t just shoot baskets in the garage to stay sharp.”
Never miss a local story.
The team hadn’t played since Dec. 18, when it lost to Jesuit, 4-0.
Boisvert got things going for the varsity team just past the 12 minute mark of the first period on an assist from Manning to give Mansfield a 1-0 lead early on. He scored again at the 8:27 mark of the first period on assists from Austin Perdue and Kyle Scott to give the varsity team a 2-0 lead in the first period.
Boisvert completed the hat trick with seven minutes to play in the second period on assists from Sullivan and Matt Murphy to get Mansfield a 3-0 lead just past the mid point of the game.
Bickford then scored for Mansfield on assists from Manning and Sullivan to give the varsity squad a 4-0 lead after two periods of play.
The Dragons were able to scored two unanswered goals to start the third period of play, but Sullivan scored on a power-play goal with less than a minute to play to close things out for Mansfield.
Andrew Holland earned the assist on the Sullivan goal.
Carroll had 20 penalty minutes in the game to Mansfield's 14 minutes, and Hunter Adams stopped 13 of 15 shots on goal in the game.
The Varsity team will play Denton County at 8:15 p.m. on Jan. 8 at the Frisco Stars Arena.
The Mansfield JV Silver team played Allen on Sunday and also picked up a 4-2 win.
Even without their leading player in points, Nick Cyprian, the Mansfield JV squad stepped up and was able to pull out the win.
“We’re starting to click at the right time,” said JV Silver head coach Tanner Thomas. “Guys are getting used to the system and coming together as a team.”
They were coming off their last win, 7-0 over Highland Park. They stand at 7-5 on the season and will next play Keller on Sunday.
