The Legacy softball team wrapped up the regular season with an impressive victory over Arlington Seguin and will enter the playoffs as the second-seeded team from District 15-4A.

Legacy will take on Corsicana in the bi-district round beginning Friday night, and coach Michelle Mayfield said she knows her team will have its hands full.

“We saw them in the first round last year,” Mayfield said. “They are a big hitting team. They've got a pretty good little pitcher and a solid defense. So, we're not going to have any easy rounds. It's going to be a tough challenge, but I think with our depth in pitching and if our offense does its job and our defense plays the way its capable of playing, I think we can be successful.”

Legacy defeated Seguin 10-0 on Friday night, and Mayfield said it was a good all-around effort from her team on a very special night for the Lady Broncos.

“I thought we played well,” Mayfield said. “It was senior night, which can be tough, because you have the emotion of that prior to the game, but I thought we hit the ball well and played good defense, and I felt that it was a solid performance.”

As the playoffs get set to get underway, Mayfield said she has been pleased with her team’s performance.

“In the last few weeks, I think that we have been improving every game,” Mayfield said. “We are hitting the ball really well, one through nine. Our defense is coming together, and we've really worked on the defense this year, just because we are very young.

“But we've really, really improved. We've learned from our mistakes, and our pitching has been solid. So I'm excited about how we stand, and how well we do depends upon how well we put games together in the playoffs and how well we take care of all three parts of the game.”

Mayfield said she believes that her team is in very good shape for the playoffs, as well.

“I think that we have a very solid district,” Mayfield said. “With Ennis, Waxahachie, Summit and Red Oak, those are some good teams. I also schedule a very tough non-district season, so I think that our schedule this season has been great to get us ready.

“We've seen some really good teams, and we have seen some teams that are not so solid, but sometimes that's what you are going to get in the playoffs depending on how the team you get plays that day. It's just a matter of raising your level and playing your style of ball each game and playing to your level.”

Mayfield said that there is one area of concern for her team heading into the postseason.

“It's probably just our mentality, because we are young team,” Mayfield said. “We've only got three seniors and only four or five kids returning from last year's varsity team. So it's just the youth of our team and what their mentality is going to be that concerns me.

“But we have played some big games throughout the season and gotten better and better, so I think we've matured a lot, and I think we'll be ready.”

Legacy will play Corsicana at 7 p.m. on Friday night at Legacy High School.
