Lake Ridge has three district games remaining, and one chance to make it work in their favor.
After a resounding 70-37 win over Ennis last Friday, the Lady Eagles basketball team finds itself in a tie with Lancaster for the fourth spot and the last entry into the postseason. Both teams were 5-6 heading into their Tuesday games. Kristian DeWitt had 23 points, Kylie Collins had 19 and Kennedy Burks, 14, in the win over Ennis.
That picture will clear after Friday’s match-up between the two teams. Lake Ridge already owns an earlier season win over Lancaster.
Tuesday’s games, though, with results unavailable at the press deadline, had Lake Ridge taking on district co-leader Summit, while Lancaster had to face the other co-leader, Seguin. Both games’ results can be found at dfwvarsity.com.
Lake Ridge head coach Stephani Gray said the players knows exactly where they stand and are not being sheltered from any pressure.
“We’ve talked to them plenty of time this season about what’s ahead. It’s a must-win,” she said of Friday’s game.
“We update the standings and we talk about it,” Gray added. “We’re honest with the kids and they’re really excited and passionate about what’s at stake. We lay it out there as to where we’re ranked and they know they’ve got to win.”
Focusing on Friday’s game was not an indication of any white flags around the Lady Eagles’ locker room regarding their contest with Summit, though.
“We’ve played them awfully close the first time,” Gray said of the 43-39 loss to the Lady Jaguars. “We haven’t laid down and died for anybody.”
Gray noted the Lady Eagles have played some of the area’s top competition early in the year, and it was for a reason – to be ready down the stretch.
“We’re playing good team basketball,” she said, “and it’s fun to coach the practices, and the team all gets along so well.”
Both Summit and Seguin have 10-1 marks.
Summit, after their Tuesday game with Lake Ridge, will take on Red Oak on Friday.
In the win over Mansfield, Dayo Olabode scored 21 points, while teammate Terriell Bradley added 16 for the Lady Wolves.
