Mansfield hockey loses to Flower Mound, 7-5

The Mansfield hockey team almost pulled off a heroic comeback in a 7-5 loss to Flower Mound recently. Flower Mound has built a 5-0 lead through the first two periods before Mansfield (1-9) staged the final-period scoring spree.

A Connor Keifer power-play goal (Cameron Clark assist) started the scoring for Mansfield in the third. Flower Mound came back with another goal to take a 6-1 lead before consecutive goals by James Sullivan (Nicholas Culter assist) and Keifer (Mason Clark assist).

Flower Mound responded with its final goal within the last minute of play. Tristan Greenwell then scored two unassisted goals within six seconds of each other to round out the scoring.

Mansfield is taking on Plano East on Thursday evening at the McKinney South ice.

Xara Winter Storm soccer tournament rescheduled

The Xara Winter Storm 5v5 soccer tournament was aptly named, but has been rescheduled for Jan. 3-5, 2014 due to the recent adverse weather conditions.

Mansfield teams finish high in local swim meet

Mansfield ISD teams put in a good showing at Saturday’s 8th Annual Mansfield Invitational swim meet at the MISD Natatorium. The field was loaded with the area’s top teams and competed in a single division rather than by Class 4A or 5A.

The Legacy boys finished third overall with 228.5 points, with Mansfield just behind in fourth place with 223. Lake Ridge was 12th, Summit 15th and Timberview 21st. Southlake Carroll ran away with the boys title with 801 points. Keller was a distant second with 256.

In the girls standings, Mansfield was fourth behind Carroll, Keller and Lubbock Coronado. The Legacy girls were 10th overall, Summit 18th and Lake Ridge 21st.

Youth Scholarship Program to take applications

The City of Mansfield Youth Scholarship Program is designed to aid children in families with limited financial resources to participate in programs and activities offered through the Mansfield Activities Center.

Scholarships are awarded for 80 percent of the course fee listed but submission of scholarship applications does not guarantee approval. Recipients must be 17 or younger and reside within the Mansfield city limits in the zip code 76063. There are other criteria for applicants which can be found at the Mansfield Parks and Recreation Center.

The next application deadline, for the spring sports season in March-May, will be the first Monday of February. For more information, call 817-453-5420.
