Mansfield golf takes district title, two teams to regionals
The Mansfield boys golf team qualified two teams for this week’s regional tournament after sweeping the district meet.
Head coach Trampas Wilson said the Tigers took first and second place at the District 8-6A meet, for the seventh time in a row.
“We split the first two teams in order to try and qualify as many golfers as we can to get regional experience,” Wilson said.
Never miss a local story.
The Mansfield 2 team was down seven shots to Midlothian after the first round but was able to rebound and make up the ground. It beat Midlothian by five shots.
“The kids played well,” Wilson said.
The Tigers will go back to their original top five golfers on the first squad and the next five on the other team, as they competed at the regional meet on Monday at Waterchase.
The state meet will be held in Austin on April 27-28.
At the regional, Wilson expected to move a team on to the state meet.
“There are 16 teams and five teams have a strong chance to advance,” Wilson said, noting Southlake Carroll, Marcus and Plano West were among the top teams. Mansfield has beaten all those teams with the exception of Carroll, Wilson said.
“It will come down to who plays well at the regional,” he said.
Among the top golfers for Mansfield, Preston Woodard has been playing strong toward the end of the season.
“He’s playing well at the right time,” Wilson said of Woodard, who shot 72-47 at the district meet.
Lake Ridge, Summit girls advance
The Lake Ridge and Summit girls golf teams advanced out of the District 14-5A golf meet to qualify for the regional tournament.
Timberview still rolling
The Timberview softball team continued its winning ways by picking up wins over Legacy and Lake Ridge last week.
The 2-0 win over Lake Ridge was a bit of revenge. Lake Ridge had tagged Timberview with its only district loss with a similar 2-0 win earlier this year. The Timberview win also helped separate the teams in the district race, as Timberview moved to 12-1 while Lake Ridge dropped to 8-4. Ennis was in second place, with Lake Ridge in third. Legacy is a game out of the playoff picture in fifth.
